American Express Joins Gay Marriage Marketing Parade

In an effort to support the current legalization of gay marriage in New York, American Express has wasted no time sponsoring wedding packages for gays to tie the knot. The website that is coordinating the packages is NYCGo.com, which is the official city guide, and it is providing links to five hotel marriage packages sponsored by American Express.

Packages being offered include “NYC I Do: Love Has No Boundaries/Born this Way Wedding Package” for 100 guests and a price tag of $25,000. More modest couples in the crowd may opt for the “I Do: The Right to Unite Package,” which is a lot less expensive as a City Hall wedding.

The Marriage Equality Act

The wedding industry, gay marriage aside, generates more than $31 billion in annual revenues. With the addition of an entirely new group of newlyweds being able to tie the knot, the wedding industry is expected to benefit financially. The Marriage Equality Act is the law just signed in New York State that is permitting gay marriage ceremonies and the campaign is dubbed “NYC I Do.” New York is hopeful that the new law will increase revenues not only for the wedding industry but for tourism to the city as well.

AmEx has Its Hand in Everything

While American Express is not directly putting on the wedding packages, it is the company sponsoring the gay wedding packages. The company, known for its prestigious credit cards, also operates the world’s largest travel network, so these hotel packages are an extension of their vacation business. Nevertheless, it seems that AmEx has been more aggressive of late in moving into hot new arenas. It recently launched a prepaid card to take advantage of that surging market.
